Guba & Khinalug Mountain Tour — History, Synagogues, Mosques, Waterfalls and the Caucasus Highlands

This immersive tour takes you to mountain Guba, Red Sloboda (the village of Mountain Jews), and the high-altitude village of Khinalug, revealing the cultural, religious and natural diversity of northern Azerbaijan.

In Guba, you will walk historic streets once visited by Mikhail Lermontov, cross the 19th-century Arch Bridge built by order of Emperor Alexander III, and visit Nizami Park, created by German prisoners. In Red Sloboda, known as the village of Jewish millionaires, you will see ancient synagogues and meet local elders preserving centuries-old traditions.

You will taste Guba saffron pahlava, traditional bread decorated with goose feathers, and learn why Guba is one of Azerbaijan’s main carpet-weaving centers (Ag Gul, Chichi, Pirabadil).

The route includes the Juma Mosque, the world’s first mosque shaped as a faceted cylinder, the Sakina Khanum Mosque built without cement, and the historic bathhouse visited by Alexandre Dumas.

Weather permitting, you will reach Khinalug, one of the oldest continuously inhabited villages in the Caucasus, located at 2,300 meters above sea level. If access is limited, the tour continues to Laza village, famous for its five cascading waterfalls and the scenic Heart Lake, surrounded by alpine landscapes.
